1   |   WHAT'S NEW AT THE "SAFETY DOCTOR?"

Hi friends and colleagues,

Hope your safety programs have had a positive start in 2004. As we enter the month of March, we're gearing up for several national observances related to safety. They include: Workplace Eye Safety Month, and Save Your Vision Month. Read more about these observances below.

In addition to making preparations for the national observances, I'm working with a local client in Orlando to implement their plan for working safely in confined spaces. If you visit TheSafetyDoctor.com, you'll find many safety products on the topic of Confined Space Entry which address the major areas of employee training required by regulation.

Finally, I've successfully restructured many of my keynote safety speeches to place more emphasis on valuable knowledge pertaining to the safety worker. Click here to browse my new safety topics. To book a keynote speaking engagement, contact me at (407) 291-1209.

Hope you enjoy the newsletter!

New Security Requirements announced by Department of Transportation
In an effort to fight terrorism and improve the security of hazardous materials being shipped, the Department of Transportation has added three major security requirements to their HAZMAT regulations. Companies that handle hazardous materials must develop a "Security Plan", and give their employees "Security Awareness" and "In-Depth Security" training.

These training materials are now available at TheSafetyDoctor.com:

DOT Hazmat Security Awareness
Regulatory Compliance Kit ... was created to help employers provide their employees with the security awareness portion of the DOT training.

DOT In-Depth Security Training
Regulatory Compliance Kit ... makes employees aware of the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials and gives them an understanding of their facility's HAZMAT Security Plan. The kit contains a "HAZMAT Transportation Security Manual" which explains the DOT's security requirements and provides a "fill-in-the-blank" HAZMAT Security Plan.

DOT Hazardous Materials Security Manual
Manual ... assists facilities in complying with the DOT's security requirements and helps them guard against potential security problems.

Updated! DOT HAZMAT "General Awareness" & "Safety Training" Kits.

Protect Your Eyes While Working

Every year, approximately 100,000 workers suffer serious eye injuries. Of these injuries, 9 out of 10 could have been avoided by following safety procedures and wearing appropriate eye protection. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 3 out of 5 workers who sustained an eye injury wore no protection. Of those workers who were wearing eye protection, 40% were wearing the wrong eye protection. As a result, the cost of eye injuries to industry is over $330,000,000 annually.

Wearing proper eye protection is a matter of vital importance to worker health and safety because some industries such as construction and automotive repair can be hazardous to your vision.
